Electrical Protection Secrets: Understanding Thermofuses and How to Install Them Correctly to Prevent Overheating and Fire Hazards

Thermofuses also known as temperature protectors, are designed as safety devices to protect equipment or systems from excessive temperatures, preventing overheating that can cause damage or even fire. Some thermofuses have polar markings in the form of contrasting colors, indicating the direction of electric current flow from the PLN power source to electrical equipment.

When replacing or reinstalling a thermofuse, it is very important to pay attention to the installation instructions from the device specifications or user manual. The success of thermal protection depends on correct installation so that the thermofuse can detect effective temperature and protect the device from overheating. If in doubt, it is recommended to refer to the user manual or consult a relevant professional.

The way a thermofuse works is based on the nature of the material which experiences structural changes or its conductive properties when exposed to high temperatures. When the temperature reaches or exceeds a specified limit, the thermofuse responds by changing its structure or activating certain mechanisms, cutting off power to the protected device.

The thermofuse is single-use (non-resettable), so once triggered, the device must be replaced to ensure effective thermal protection. This makes thermofuse a crucial component in maintaining the safety and performance of electronic and electrical devices.

Thermofuses are divided into two main forms, namely axial and radial. The Axial Type is installed directly on small devices such as irons or fans, while the Radial Type is used on devices with greater power such as electric motors or lamps. Both work by breaking the electrical circuit when the temperature reaches a certain limit, preventing overheating and potential damage or risk of fire.

The classification of Axial Type and Radial Type is based on their physical form, not the type of material from which they are made. Although both can use Alloy or Organic depending on the construction material. For example, the Axial Type has a symmetrical tube shape, while the Radial Type has a symmetrical shape on its two legs which can be a block shape or a button shape.
